Paulinho Garcia really didn’t need to come to the United States to make it.

Back in his native Brazil, he had a thriving career writing commercials for TV and radio, playing in a rock band and composing music for himself.

But when a bunch of musician friends who’d traveled north encouraged him to apply for a visa and come to Chicago to play music for a while, he decided to give it a shot.

“Why not?” Garcia says.

He got a one-year visa and made friends with the local chief of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. “He loved Brazilian music, Brazilian coffee,” Garcia recalls. “I kept getting extensions and then when he was going to retire, he said, `Hey, you’d better become a resident.’ And I did.”

Today, Garcia is a fixture on the Chicago jazz and Latin music scenes.

His first CD, “Jazzmineiro,” has just been released on the Southport label. A party will be held next Tuesday at Bossa Nova to celebrate its
